School is back in session here in SWFL, and you know what that means. . . the kids are all back together again swapping germs. Especially in the younger grades, the beginning of the school year is often marked with the kids coming home sniffling and coughing with the first colds of the season. The best way to combat this cycle is with strengthening the immune system.
Having a strong immune system is the key to having good health. We are exposed to viruses and bacteria daily but don’t always fall victim to them. Why? Because our immune system protects us from them.
There are a number of factors that can lower immune function.
Because most of these factors are familiar to you, your next question is likely, “what is nervous system disruption?” The nervous system controls every other system in the body and that includes the immune system. If the nervous system is functioning properly, the immune system is stronger. The spine (specifically the upper spine) plays a role in how the nervous system communicates and as a result, how the immune system functions.
Research indicates that chiropractic patients have incredibly strong immune systems. Dr. Ronald Pero, chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor in Environmental Health at New York University measured 107 individuals who had received long-term Chiropractic care. The chiropractic patients were shown to have a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care, and a 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer or serious diseases.
Summarizing the research, Pero concluded, “Chiropractic may optimize whatever genetic abilities you have so that you can fully resist serious disease…I have never seen a group other than this show a 200% increase over normal patients.”
As more evidence, in 1995 a study was conducted with HIV patients. HIV/Aids is so devastating because it destroys the immune system. One of the markers that is tested in the number of CD4 cells—the fewer in number the less effective the immune system will be. These cells are important because they recruit other immune cells to fight infection.
In the study there were two groups. One received specific upper cervical chiropractic, while the control group did not. Over the course of the six-month study, the group receiving upper cervical adjustments had a 48% INCREASE in CD4 cells, while the control group saw an 8% DECREASE in CD4 cells.
If that doesn’t demonstrate the effect of upper cervical chiropractic on immune function,I’m not sure what else I can tell you. The “proof is in the pudding” as they used to say.
So, if you want your child to have a bulletproof immune system here is where you start:
A stronger immune system will help keep your kids from picking up nasty bugs at school, viruses, and lessen allergic responses, and keep a lot of asthma issues in check.

“As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way”....if you are a Seinfeld or "Festivus" fan that line should sound familiar. Often we continue to attack the same problem the same way over and over hoping for a different result. Isn’t that the popular definition of insanity?
When it came to my allergies, that was the approach. Here is an allergy shot. The result will be the same (you will still suffer) but here it is anyway. I did that as a kid for five years. On top of it, we tried various oral medications and nose sprays. At the end of the day, I still suffered daily from a stuffed up nose, painful sinuses, migraines, and worst of all severe fatigue.
As I got older I stayed on the insanity path and took Benadryl and a host of other things with the same result—I still had bad allergies.
The problem was, we were all looking at it the wrong way. First off, what is an allergic reaction? It is when your body recognizes an outside substance as harmful. Your immune system goes into combat mode and attacks. When it is a virus or harmful bacteria that is what we want. When it is something that isn’t harmful we call it an allergy.
The issue is, the body isn’t adapting to its environment as it was created to do, and certainly my body wasn’t adapting. Seasons would change, it would rebel and I would be miserable. I was on that cycle my whole life until I finally decided that I needed a different approach. Enter upper cervical chiropractic, the day my life and my allergies changed.
The purpose of chiropractic is to keep the spine healthy. Since the spine houses and protects the spinal cord, a misalignment (especially in the upper neck) can lead to a series of events that can interfere with the proper communication of the nervous system. The nervous system has a big impact on the immune system so, poor or incorrect information being exchanged can cause an outside substance to be recognized as harmful, and an allergic response kicks in. Once corrected, the nervous system is usually able to send the right information, the immune system behaves, and allergic responses stop occurring.
After my upper cervical adjustment, I noticed it was easier to breath and my sinuses were less stuffed up. Within a few weeks, my fatigue was improved, and after a few months, my allergies were 90% gone. I may get the occasional day of mild sinus pressure a few times a year now, but it has no impact on my life and is very temporary.
If you feel like your body or your child’s body isn’t adapting, and allergies are making you miserable, maybe its time to take a different approach. Upper cervical chiropractic has had great results in this area. One of the most essential items children get at the beginning of the school year is the backpack. Although it is necessary, here at Upper Cervical Health Centers, we know it is also one of the leading causes of back and shoulder pain in children.
Did you know, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are more than 6,500 emergency room visits each year by children ages 5-18, which stem from injuries related to heavy backpacks or book bags. Additional research further shows that by the end of their teen years, nearly 60% of children experience at least one low-back pain episode. Backpack loads are responsible for a significant amount of back pain in children, teens and college students.
As children go back to school here are some helpful tips to help prevent any unnecessary back pain.
We know that teachers give homework, and the easiest way for children to get their books and school supplies back and forth to school is to use a backpack. So that’s not changing anytime soon, but you can prevent back, shoulder and neck injuries by following some of these basic instructions. It is also important to remember that a healthy and properly functioning spine will hold up much better to heavy loads. So, remember to bring your child into Upper Cervical Health Centers to have your child's spine checked for proper alignment, especially if they complain of headaches, back, neck, or shoulder pain. Some simple, gentle adjustments can make the difference in their pain, and can keep your child’s entire nervous system functioning in a healthy way.
We offer a free spinal check to find out if your child’s spine is in proper alignment. Call Dr. Lee Angle at Upper Cervical Health Centers today for an appointment 239-243-8810
