School is back in session here in SWFL, and you know what that means. . . the kids are all back together again swapping germs. Especially in the younger grades, the beginning of the school year is often marked with the kids coming home sniffling and coughing with the first colds of the season. The best way to combat this cycle is with strengthening the immune system.
Having a strong immune system is the key to having good health. We are exposed to viruses and bacteria daily but don’t always fall victim to them. Why? Because our immune system protects us from them.
There are a number of factors that can lower immune function.
Because most of these factors are familiar to you, your next question is likely, “what is nervous system disruption?” The nervous system controls every other system in the body and that includes the immune system. If the nervous system is functioning properly, the immune system is stronger. The spine (specifically the upper spine) plays a role in how the nervous system communicates and as a result, how the immune system functions.
Research indicates that chiropractic patients have incredibly strong immune systems. Dr. Ronald Pero, chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor in Environmental Health at New York University measured 107 individuals who had received long-term Chiropractic care. The chiropractic patients were shown to have a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care, and a 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer or serious diseases.
Summarizing the research, Pero concluded, “Chiropractic may optimize whatever genetic abilities you have so that you can fully resist serious disease…I have never seen a group other than this show a 200% increase over normal patients.”
As more evidence, in 1995 a study was conducted with HIV patients. HIV/Aids is so devastating because it destroys the immune system. One of the markers that is tested in the number of CD4 cells—the fewer in number the less effective the immune system will be. These cells are important because they recruit other immune cells to fight infection.
In the study there were two groups. One received specific upper cervical chiropractic, while the control group did not. Over the course of the six-month study, the group receiving upper cervical adjustments had a 48% INCREASE in CD4 cells, while the control group saw an 8% DECREASE in CD4 cells.
If that doesn’t demonstrate the effect of upper cervical chiropractic on immune function,I’m not sure what else I can tell you. The “proof is in the pudding” as they used to say.
So, if you want your child to have a bulletproof immune system here is where you start:
A stronger immune system will help keep your kids from picking up nasty bugs at school, viruses, and lessen allergic responses, and keep a lot of asthma issues in check.
